Job Description

The Operations and Engagement Manager is responsible for the effective day-to-day operation of The Hydrographic Society UK & Ireland and for developing strong, active relationships with its members, volunteers, branches, corporate partners, educational institutions and the wider hydrographic and seabed-mapping community.

The role combines operational management with member engagement, events, communications and stakeholder development. The postholder will ensure that the Society provides a professional, responsive and valued service to its members while supporting the Society’s strategic objectives and long-term development.

The role will suit an organised, proactive individual with an awareness of the hydrographic, ocean mapping, marine geospatial or related sectors and is comfortable working with professionals ranging from students and early-career practitioners through to senior industry, academic and government representatives.

Candidate Specifications

  • Proven experience in delivering business objectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in an accessible style.
  • Familiarity with editing a website, newsletter and social media.
  • Experience with an accounting software.
  • Capability in events management, preferably catering to national and international audiences.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple objectives simultaneously.
  • Comfortable engaging with all sectors of the Hydrographic and associated industries including managing relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Able to work independently and to prioritise work set by senior management.
  • Adapts well to changing situations and priorities. Expected to be flexible in their duties and carry out any other duties commensurate with the role which fall within the general scope of the job, as requested by the Chief Executive Officer or senior management.
  • Experience of working within the Charity or not-for-profit sector is desirable.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Experience in a scientific related discipline, preferably in the hydrographic / marine / other relevant sector.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of THS:UKI, ensuring effective administration, membership services, financial processes and organisational delivery.
  • Support senior management, the Board and committees through the preparation of reports, management information and meeting papers, and the implementation of agreed strategies and decisions.
  • Coordinate activities and maintain effective working relationships with THS:UKI Regions, IFHS, volunteers, suppliers, professional advisers and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage the delivery of the Society’s conferences, events and publications programme, including logistics, budgets, resourcing and operational support.
  • Oversee membership, accreditation and associated administrative and payment processes, including the management of relevant staff and contracted personnel.
  • Support financial administration, budgeting and expenditure control, operating within delegated authority and making recommendations on significant expenditure where required.
  • Develop and maintain effective policies, processes, systems and operational documentation, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and organisational performance.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant company, charity, legal, financial, health and safety, data protection and business ethics requirements.

Engagement Responsibilities

  • Lead initiatives to grow and retain membership, increase participation and demonstrate the value of THS:UKI membership across all career stages.
  • Lead the Society’s communications, media and digital engagement, overseeing publications, newsletters, website, social media, marketing materials and promotional activity to ensure timely, engaging and professional delivery.
  • Develop content and relationships with contributing authors, advertisers and other partners to support the growth and reach of the Society’s publications and communications.
  • Build strong relationships with members, volunteers, Branch Committees, the Board, IFHS and external stakeholders, encouraging collaboration, knowledge sharing and active participation.
  • Promote hydrography and the hydrographic profession, including engagement with universities, students and early-career professionals through careers, mentoring, professional development, networking and outreach activities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships across the hydrographic, marine science and wider professional community, identifying opportunities for partnerships, corporate membership, sponsorship and collaborative initiatives.
  • Represent and promote THS:UKI at relevant events and external forums, helping to strengthen its profile, influence and international reach.
  • Gather and respond to member and stakeholder feedback, using insight and engagement data to continually improve membership services, communications and Society activities.
