Job Description

Purpose

To conduct all aspects of hydrographic data acquisition, processing, analysis and chart production for the Port of Southampton and other locations across the local area as well as the wider ABP group as may be required.

Scope

Undertaking hydrographic surveys and chart production, delivery of an efficient service, providing high quality information for other departments to make informed, safe operational decisions.

Accountabilities

1. To undertake hydrographic survey field work on board the port survey vessels (data acquisition and quality control);

2. Data reduction and processing and the production of charts, and other documents/data as directed by the Principal Hydrographic Surveyor

3. Ensuring continuity through data archiving and maintaining records (e.g. marine assets and dredge volumes)

4. Maintenance of hydrographic equipment and systems – including survey vessel(s)

5. Conduct the maintenance of existing hydrographic equipment and assist in implementation of new tools and development of procedures and systems as appropriate

6. Boat handling on survey vessels and general boat husbandry as required

7. Assist Principal Hydrographic Surveyor with training of hydrographic and other marine staff

8. Overseeing annual preparation/production of ABP Tide table publication

9. Assist in supplying hydrographic information, data and advice to the Harbour Master and other internal/external contacts or agencies as required

10. To undertake other related marine and hydrographic duties as directed by the Harbour Master or Principal Hydrographic Surveyor and deputise for the Principal Hydrographic Surveyor as required

Essential

  • Higher education to degree/diploma level in a relevant marine/geographical discipline ·
  • Experience of multi- and single-beam surveying ·
  • Proficiency in numeracy, literacy, IT skills
  • Ability to work as part of a small specialist team with a flexible attitude
  • Confidence to follow instructions and make own decisions as required ·
  • Boat Handling skills, experience and qualification (ideally PB Adv commercially endorsed)
  • Experience with HYPACK and QPS suite ·
  • GIS and/or CAD skills
  • 2-5 years experience as a hydrographic survey (5+ years for Senior)

Ideal

  • PgDip Advanced Hydrography for Professionals or HPAS accreditation ·
  • Experience in a port or hydrographic survey environment
  • Experience with one or all of the following: laser scanners / drone surveys / topographical surveys
  • Membership of relevant professional body or association (e.g. THSUK, IMarEST etc.)
