Job Description

CMS GeoScience is a multidisciplinary geoscience team collecting marine data across the UK and Europe – from ports and harbours to offshore energy, civil engineering and marine extractive industries. Our data helps clients understand the marine environment before, during and after their developments.

We’re looking for an experienced Hydrographic Surveyor to join a specialised, close-knit team delivering accurate site characterisation for offshore and nearshore projects, and producing clear, high-quality reports for our clients.

What the role involves:

  • Working away from home for several weeks at a time, in demanding nearshore environments across the UK and Europe -with opportunities to work further afield

  • Flexible & pro-active approach to working patterns to suit unpredictable tidal and weather constrained survey windows

  • Reviewing, interpreting and reporting on survey data when back in the office

This role is right for you if you:

  • Want real ownership in a small, ambitious, growing team where your work genuinely matters

  • Enjoy being challenged and are motivated to keep developing your career

  • Are organised, adaptable, and calm under pressure in fast-changing situations

  • Communicate clearly and work well with a range of stakeholders

  • Take ownership of your decisions and prioritise safety – your own and your team’s

  • A practical, hands-on approach

What you’ll need:

  • 5+ years’ experience and a degree in Hydrography or a closely related marine discipline

  • Experience mobilising/demobilising a range of inshore-to-offshore vessels

  • Strong data processing and interpretation skills

  • Proficiency with Trimble HydroPRO, Hypack, EIVA and QPS QINSy navigation software

  • Hands-on experience mobilising and operating MBES, Single Beam, USBL, RTK GPS and related survey equipment

  • Experience with processing software such as QINSy, Caris, Qloud and Fledermaus

  • Full UK driving licence

  • Eligibility to work in the UK

  • ENG1 Medical and Offshore Sea Survival (or equivalent)

  • Strong IT and technical writing skills, particularly in Microsoft 365

  • Fluent spoken and written English

  Nice to have:

  • Cat A or Cat B certification

  • Software, electronics or engineering experience

  • Interest or experience in remote USV operations

  • Experience in shallow nearshore and coastal environments

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary based on experience

  • Contributory pension scheme

  • Private medical insurance

  • Offshore top-up pay

  • 28 days annual leave (including statutory holidays), plus up to 5 days sell-back/buy-extra

  • Comprehensive training and genuine progression opportunities

  • A friendly, inclusive culture with regular social events

CMS GeoScience is an equal opportunities employer. We invest in our people because their strengths are what drive the business forward.
