Hydrographic Surveyor

UK Dredging (UKD) is a wholly owned operating division of ABP, the UK’s leading port operator. We are looking for a Hydrographic Surveyor to join the team based in Garston to provide survey related support for our operations.

We operate the largest British-owned dredging fleet and specialises in providing reliable and efficient port maintenance dredging services to ABP and third-party clients throughout the UK and Northwest Europe.

Accountabilities:

  • Complete navigation and dredge related hydrographic surveys (both Multibeam and Single beam) for ABP, UKD and external clients, including survey design, on site data collection, post processing, analysis, presentation, and reporting.
  • Provide technical support where necessary to other ABP departments, including survey, marine and commercial/property departments.
  • Operation of survey vessel, including towing, deployment, and recovery, set up and boat handling with responsibility for all vessel operations.
  • Maintain vessel and survey equipment to ensure that calibration, certification, and servicing routines are completed in accordance with manufacturer and industry standards.
  • Provide technical input and support for dredging operations.
  • Provide non-routine out of hours technical input and support for dredging operations including dredge master, ocean wise, and 3rd party data, were vital for operations.
  • Play an active role in contributing towards the continued advancement of UK Dredging and the survey department. Keeping up to date with technical developments, standards and working practices and assist with implementation where appropriate.
  • Interface with the operations department and ports and clients’ representatives to ensure that surveys are suitably scheduled, and outputs delivered to support the business needs.
  • Liaise with Harbour master’s and UK Hydrographic Office for routine data delivery and general interface.
  • Assist UKD Commercial team in tendering of future work using hydrographic data and site experience/knowledge.
  • Maintain and take responsibility for a healthy and safe working environment and work in accordance with company policy and statutory requirements at all times. Continually develop, review and work in compliance with Safe Systems of Work and Risk Assessments.
  • Installation of hardware and software to support surveys and dredging operations, with ongoing support including the provision of on-board training in the use of dredge guidance systems.
  • Help to maintain effective communication that supports company values and strategic pillars, motivates and promotes engagement, culture, awareness and compliance across the fleet.

Essential:

  • Sound technical knowledge and previous experience of single beam and multi-beam hydrographic surveying methods and techniques, to recognised industry standards – ideally minimum of 5 years’ hydrographic survey experience.
  • Appropriate powerboat qualification and small boat handling experience. RYA Yacht master with Commercial Endorsement preferred.
  • Full driving licence with towing endorsement.
  • Highly organised with attention to detail and the ability to work effectively under pressure, manage priorities and work to challenging and sometimes changing objectives and deadlines.
  • Independent problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexible approach to working hours including early mornings, evenings and weekends and willing to travel extensively throughout the UK and overseas as necessary. Ability to offer out of hours survey support when required.

Ideal:

  • Educated to degree level, preferably in a marine/survey related discipline. 3 (2022 version) •
  • Capability in multibeam hydrography, side scan sonar and magnetometer data acquisition and interpretation.
  • Previous use of industry standard survey hardware and software packages including Hypack, AutoCAD, Trimble and Vale port software and familiar with industry standard dredge guidance systems such as Dredge master.
  • Experienced in computing and networking including computing components and electronics.
