The Hydrographic Society UK & Ireland, Southern Branch recently attended the University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science Careers Day, bringing the world of hydrography and marine geospatial science to the forefront for aspiring students and graduates.

Held at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, the event provided an excellent platform for students to explore career pathways in surveying, ocean mapping, offshore energy, and marine data analysis. Representatives from the Southern Branch of THS:UKI engaged with students from oceanography, geography, engineering, and maritime studies, offering insights into the diverse opportunities available within the hydrographic profession.

Visitors to the Society’s stand learned about the importance of hydrography in supporting safe navigation, coastal management, renewable energy development, and environmental monitoring. Representatives of THS:UKI shared real-world project experiences, discussed emerging technologies and highlighted routes into the profession, including internships, graduate schemes, and specialist training.

The career fair proved to be a valuable opportunity for meaningful conversations, networking, and inspiring future talent to consider a rewarding career in hydrography.
