At 3D at Depth, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. We’re pleased to announce the issue of four new significant patents that solidifies our position as market leaders in underwater imaging and metrology:
- US Patent 12,019,159: Systems and Methods for Monitoring Underwater Structures
- US Patent 12,146,951: Underwater Optical Metrology System
- US Patent 12,169,240: Underwater Optical Positioning Systems and Methods
- Australian Patent 2018300057
These patents mark another milestone in our mission to develop cutting-edge market technologies that enhance precision and efficiency in underwater operations.
Advanced Monitoring of Underwater Structures
The US Patent 12,019,159, issued on June 25, 2024, introduces innovative methods for monitoring underwater structures.
This patent addresses key challenges in subsea operations with features such as:
- Temperature Detection: Utilising advanced scanning techniques to monitor water temperature around underwater manmade and natural structures. The invention includes a single sensor to create both a 3D image, along with a simultaneous 3D water temperature map of the same area. The 3D temperature map can be used to monitor a temperature at a top of a well plug or internal pipe sealing plug for example as part of an abandonment operation, during reservoir stimulation / carbon reinjection, or during reservoir lifting operations. Other applications include study of deep-sea thermal vent fields or remote temperature monitoring during dry cask storage operations for spent nuclear fuel.
- Vibration Detection: The same sensor can also be used to measure amplitude and frequency of vibrations to evaluate structural integrity, including measuring and calculating vibration modes of the structure.
With applications in asset integrity management and environmental monitoring, this patent reinforces our commitment to delivering practical, high-impact, cost efficient solutions.
Underwater Optical Metrology System
The US Patent 12,146,951, issued on November 19, 2024, introduces broad systems and methods for underwater metrology systems.
Key features include:
- Underwater optical metrology system with variable optical components that can modify the amplitude or polarisation of the light.
- Precise relative and geo referenced location measurements of underwater objects.
- Dual Techniques: Combining optical and acoustic methods to provide precise relative positioning.
- Robust Performance: Delivering accurate location data even in challenging underwater conditions where optical techniques alone may be impractical.
This innovation underscores our commitment to solving real-world challenges by developing advanced technology to deliver practical applications.
Underwater Optical Positioning Systems and Methods
The US Patent 12,169,240, issued on December 17, 2024, introduces methods and systems for using an optical system to assist with exact placement of objects in an underwater environment. The methods and systems allow for several benefits including:
- Accurate determination of a relative or georeferenced location for equipment to be placed.
- Projecting a visible target on the seabed to aid with accurate placement of the equipment.
- Reverse application where the optical system is on a moving object/vehicle and monitoring its location in reference to other underwater structures and features
This patent series expands our impact in various fields of work, from underwater construction to underwater vehicle navigation.
Expanding Global Impact with Australian Patents
Australian Patent 2018300057 issued on October 31, 2024, further extends our global reach, providing a foundation for advanced underwater solutions in the Asia-Pacific region. This patent also focuses on combined optical and acoustic underwater metrology systems to allow for robust measurements in a wider variety of underwater scenarios. This achievement highlights our ability to innovate across markets and demonstrates our dedication to addressing the unique needs of clients worldwide.
