Senior Geophysicist/Geoscientist

Spectrum Geophysics specialise in coastal geophysical surveys, supporting a wide range of clients in the offshore renewables sector. Spectrum Geosurvey are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our growing team based in our Lymington office.

The successful candidate will be required to perform a variety of roles within the company and the position is a mix of onshore and offshore working.

Onshore, the typical working week is 37.5 hours (with flexible hours) from our modern office in Lymington. The successful candidate should be prepared to travel and work offshore on a regular basis, typically 30-90 days per year, on a 12-hour shift pattern for 2-4 weeks at a time.

Supported by our experienced team, the successful candidate will carry out the following tasks within our growing company:

  • Acquisition, quality checking, processing, and interpretation of geophysical survey data from a wide variety of systems including sub-bottom profiler, magnetometer, side scan sonar and multibeam bathymetry echosounder systems.
  • Assisting with survey planning, vessel mobilisations and project management.
  • Calibration and maintenance of survey equipment.
  • Technical report writing & GIS charting.
  • Aiding with vessel equipment mobilisations.
  • Training and mentoring junior members of staff.
  • Research of new technologies & techniques to keep Spectrum on the cutting edge for survey operations, data processing and data management.

Professional Experience - Essential

  • Degree in a relevant subject such as Geophysics, Physics, Geology, Geoscience, Hydrography or similar.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the offshore survey industry
  • Experience working on nearshore marine survey projects.
  • Extensive technical report writing experience.
  • Strong experience with industry software including Oasis Montaj, SonarWiz, RadExPro & Kingdom Suite.
  • Ability to quality check data with a keen eye for minor details.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent computer literacy, including a high level of competence in the use of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Willing to work in the offshore marine environment and away from home for periods up to 4 weeks.
  • Ability to work in a team but also take initiative and work unsupervised when required.
  • High level of practical skill, including involvement in project set-up and vessel mobilisations.
  • Fluency in English, written and verbal.
  • Full, valid UK driving licence.

Professional Experience - Desirable

  • Experience working on offshore renewable energy survey projects.
  • Strong programming/scripting knowledge (Python, MATLAB, etc.).
  • GIS knowledge and experience with GIS software (ArcGIS/QGIS).
  • An understanding of the importance of data management.
  • Experience and confidence in liaising with clients.
  • Offshore certification.
