Administered by the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), the UK CSM is a network of over 30 public sector organisations and academia that sets out to coordinate the collection, management and access of publicly funded seabed mapping data.

The UK CSM has four key priorities:

  • Collaboration – creating conditions and infrastructure to enable our diverse community to come together and deliver cross-government coordination.
  • Data standards – increasing the adoption of agreed UK and international standards for the collection of marine geospatial data and metadata.
  • Data collection – helping stakeholders understand what data collection activities are being planned and identify collaborative opportunities, in turn removing duplication and optimising efficiencies.
  • Data accessibility – working together to remove obstacles that prevent access to publicly funded data whilst also honouring intellectual property (IP) rights.

Seabed mapping data is crucial for almost every activity undertaken in the marine environment, including maritime trade, sustainable development and resource management, while also supporting national security and infrastructure.

The UK CSM invites partners across the public sector, academia, and industry to collaborate – unlocking the full potential of seabed mapping data.
