About UKHO

The UKHO is a leading centre for hydrography, providing marine geospatial data to inform maritime decisions. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners to support maritime navigation, safety, security and marine development around the UK and worldwide.

The role

You will join the Geodesy & Tides section of the Terrestrial Science Team, within the Scientific Analysis Group; a centre of excellence, responsible for the provision of advice to UKHO, the MOD and the maritime community on matters relating to tides and geodesy. The geodesy and tides databases are used across the UKHO and the data is used in a variety of UKHO products.

As Senior Geodesy Specialist, you will provide geodetic technical advice and support to UKHO teams and colleagues and more widely across the MOD and the maritime community.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing the analysis and processing of geodetic and survey data into a range of databases for onward use in products and services
  • Preparing and delivering geodetic training to UKHO staff
  • Managing and developing the geodetic databases and data management processes to meet the requirements of the UKHO
  • Providing geodetic technical advice and support on UKHO projects and to UKHO customers
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of coordinate reference systems and their use within GIS systems
  • Assisting with the validation and appraisal of the geodetic content of incoming hydrographic surveys
  • Assisting with the writing and maintenance of defence geodetic & positioning system SOP
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of positioning system developments to ensure UKHO remains fully aware of new developments and their impact

We are looking for a supportive team player who is also able to work with a high level of autonomy and responsibility. You will have strong analytical skills and the ability to work methodically in order to solve technical issues. You will also have the confidence to engage with a range of customers and stakeholders. An in-depth knowledge of geodesy, geodetic reference systems, map projections and geodetic theory is equally important.
