The primary role of the Hydrographic Surveyor (Site) is to be based at USS facilities in Hayle, Cornwall and to facilitate the integration, testing, calibration and operation of Hydrographic Survey equipment onboard manned and unmanned surface vessels.
This role requires the individual to have excellent attention to detail, quality and safety. They should be adaptable, flexible and work well in stressful and emergent situations, as well as having a ‘can do’ attitude towards their colleagues and work.
This role will primarily be undertaken from the Hayle facilities or onsite but there may also be requirements to work from home or at one of USS’s Remote Operation Centres (ROC’s). Additional requirements include the Hydrographic Surveyor to be proficient in survey planning, data processing and reporting.

Supported by: Operations, Engineering and Administration Teams
As a site based Hydrographic Surveyor you will be required to:
• Conduct hydrographic survey operations in accordance with survey specifications
• Undertake quality control checks prior and during operations to ensure survey specifications are being met
• Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for USV operations and feedback operational experience to the team to continually improve and update procedures and systems
• Work alongside USV Operators in the successful execution of Hydrographic Surveys
• Work with external contractors relaying survey requirements for operating USV
• Test survey equipment pre/post deployment
• Undertake flexible shift/watch patterns in support of 24-hour survey operations which may require unsociable hours during evenings and weekends
• Support the Research and Development (R&D) department with operational tests and field trials
• Assist production engineers and designers with the configuration of survey payloads
Required
• Good communication skills and works well in small teams or unsupervised as an individual
• BSc level (or higher) in Hydrography or similar
• 3+ years of relevant Hydrographic experience
• Experience in interfacing survey equipment
• A detailed understanding of calibration and QA/QC procedures
• Experience of using Multi-Beam Echo Sounders (MBES) with Inertial Navigation Systems (INS)
• Sound knowledge and experience in using standard MS office software as well as commercially available Hydrographic software packages for data acquisition and post processing
• Previous experience in report writing and interpretation of results
• Possession of a full UK driving licence
• Valid offshore medical and sea survival certification
Desirable
• Completed a FIG/IHO/ICA Cat-A accredited course or equivalent, and/or a member of an individual accreditation scheme such as IFHS HPAS
• Knowledge and experience using other survey equipment such as, Side Scan Sonar (SSS), Sub-Bottom Profilers (SBP), Magnetometers, USBL systems, ADCP, DVL & 3D mobile laser scanning systems
• Familiarity with dimensional control surveys
• Evidence basic boat operation skills including an RYA Powerboat Level II qualification
• RYA Marine Radio (Short Range Certificate)
