Hydrographic Surveyor

CMS GeoScience Ltd is looking for a Hydrographic Surveyor to join the team, primarily based in our office near Falmouth, Cornwall.

Our multidisciplinary geoscience team specialise in the collection of data from around the UK and Europe for a variety of marine business ranging from ports & harbours to offshore energy developments, civil engineering projects through to marine extractive industries. Our important data allows Clients to properly evaluate our marine environment prior to, during and after developments or activities take place.

You will become a key member of this very specialised team and will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to accurate site characterisation and marine engineering projects, offshore and nearshore site investigations and the production of accurate and concise reports in accordance with industry and company standards.

This role will primarily be based in our South-West offices near Falmouth but will demand a flexible approach towards your working location. You will also work from our sites in Plymouth or Lowestoft, with travel/temporary accommodation provided as required.

You will typically be required to work away from home for several weeks at a time throughout the year, in demanding nearshore environments in the UK and Europe as well as having the opportunity to work around the globe.  Tidal and coastal/inshore working demands a flexible approach to working patterns.

When not away you will be working to review and interpret the data in order to compile accurate reports for our clients.

What do you need to apply?

  • 3 years experience and a degree in Hydrography or closely related marine discipline.
  • Extensive knowledge & skills for data processing and interpretation of relevant data.
  • Ability to use Trimble, HydroPRO, Hypack and QPS QINSY navigation software.
  • Experience of mobilising and operating MBES, Single Beam, USBL, RTK GPS and all related survey equipment.
  • Experience in processing software such as QINSy, Caris, Qloud, Fledermaus
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Currently eligible to work in the UK.
  • ENG1 Medical & Offshore Sea Survival or equivalent.
  • Strong IT & technical writing skills, especially in Microsoft 365
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Already living or willingness to relocate within daily commuting distance of Falmouth.

Nice to have but not essential:

  • Cat A or B certification
  • Software programming and or electronics / engineering experience
  • An interest / experience in remote USV operations
  • Experience of working in the shallow nearshore and coastal environments
  • Experience of mobilising and demobilising a variety of inshore to offshore vessels
  • Practically minded & ‘hands-on’ aptitude
  • Recreational offshore / marine experience and interests
